Running A Business While In College

Hey everyone! I’m back with another blog post because I have thoughts to put into words once again. I feel that it’s nice and healthy to look at how times in our lives are affecting us. For this instance I plan to use my chosen circumstance: Running a media company while in my freshman year of college.

First off, I want to put a disclaimer here: My company is not an LLC or my main source of income yet, so it is not super official. It does take a lot of my time and effort as I am trying to get it to the point where it is my full time job, but I’m not there just yet. In combination with thinking of next steps in branding and marketing, running the socials and keeping the website updated are a few tasks that must be done between shoots and day to day. When it comes to content creation, there is much more than meets the eye.

The tasks listed above are for FarSight Media. I do the same tasks for Emephotographs, my personal brand. I must keep up with this website and the @emephotographs Instagram page as well. Furthermore, I continue to work with other creatives and talented individuals to learn and grow in our respective crafts. Of course, the main idea of this post is how I manage this with the ‘mountain’ of school work I must be dealing with as a freshman Multimedia major at Point Park University.

Well let me get one thing clear. I do a lot and think about a lot on a daily basis and it is by no means easy. However, I chose and welcomed all of the work that sits on my plate every day. I want to be a CEO. I want to be my own boss. I want to be successful and travel with my partner all over the world and be financially stable enough to do so as much as I please. I recognize that this is all necessary to even have a shot at all of this so I do it. I say this to say this is not a post of me complaining or asking for pity. I love content creation and am passionate about photography to an extent where I will do it every day for the rest of my life because I love it!

With all of this being said, time management is a key. I am a person who has never really had the best time management skills, so starting FSM and becoming a college student really whipped me into shape. I have to set time aside for certain tasks and manage my time in order to get everything done. Sometimes I cannot get to every task or meet up with my friends because I have work to do. I have to be locked in and think critically in classes and creatively when working on art, so I feel that all of this has expanded my view and improved my ability to think.

Overall, the process has been both challenging and rewarding. I love and am proud of what I have done, and I have learned so much about myself and my work flow. Additionally, I have learned so much about content creation and storytelling that will help me over the course of my career and life, so I could not be happier with my decisions to attend Point Park University as a Multimedia major and CEO of FarSight Media.
